I just tested a few things and the Heil gives me more room to maneuver and sound acceptable. The AT2005 really wants me talking more on axis and at 4 inches, and that should be identical to the ATR2100. My Mackie and Focusrite equipment have strong, low noise preamps but I've heard Behringer can be noisy near the top and try and pull it back in. Gain is set way up at 90-95% of maximum or at maximum though I try not to do that out of habit. When I use any of my mics I am talking directed off axis from the barrel at ~30 degrees and 5 inches from the end of the barrel, 4 inches from the pop filter. That's why the three nearly identical mics like the ATR2100 became so popular. There are several XLR to USB interfaces from just getting a USB mixer and being done with it to a cable from SHURE people seem to like (~$100) to a Blue Icicle (~$35 though I hear they can be fragile). If you ever need a mixer or second audio source a USB only mic will hold you back. The Yeti Pro (an extra hundred dollars) has an XLR port as well as USB. That cable does not supply phantom power so I can't use it with the condenser mics but my environment isn't conducive to them in general.īe very careful before you decide on a mic that locks you into the USB ghetto. It also requires the gain to be cranked way up like the Audio-Technica dynamic mics. I have used a $12 XLR to USB cable on the Heil with an IOS device before and that worked fine. The other mics I own are a Heil PR40 (my current default) and two condenser mics an MLX 550 and MLX 551 I got as part of a hardware kit. The most significant benefit of the ATR2100 over the cheaper AT2005 or the Samson Q2U is it has a lifetime warranty while the other two have a one year warranty. I got the AT2005 to compare to the virtually identical ATR2100 and then shipped the ATR2100 to AudioTechnica for warranty repair, as I experienced similar issues to what you describe and once I had a baseline for dynamics are always quiet as opposed to this mic is really frick'n quiet I knew it was a hardware issue, and that's resolved now. I only own a few real mics, two of which have USB outputs. Resources /r/podcasting Wiki Related Subreddits Questions? Posted something that's missing? Ask a mod.

While I understand a pat on the back and a word of encouragement is a good thing, it's extraneous to the purpose of the subreddit. Please no kudos threads where you reach a milestone, thank the academy and your agent or another gratuitous congratulatory verbiage as these look suspiciously like a self-promotional post in an attempt to bypass Rule 3.
